Baseball Splits Season Opener

Auburndale, Fla.- The Becker College baseball team split their doubleheader with Beloit College this afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The Hawks used extra innings to win the opener 4-3, but dropped the nightcap 3-2.

In game one, Beloit got on the board in the top of the third inning when Emory Nelms drove in Jake Parrott with a RBI single up the middle.

The Hawks evened the score in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a double down the leftfield line. Austin Phillips drove in Corey (Thomson, Ga.) with a double into the left centerfield gap, tying the game at 1-1.

Beloit took a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning when Alex Jennings singled to centerfield, scoring Evan Mascitti from second base. The Buccaneers increased their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth when Nelms hit an RBI doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Parrott.

The Hawks would tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Todd Tompkins (New Haven, Conn.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Weston Meehan followed with a single into right field, pushing Tompkins to third, chasing Buccaneer starter Andrew Edwards from the game. Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.) cut the Buccaneers lead in half when he singled to centerfield, scoring Tompkins from third. The Hawks tied the game after Green stole third and then proceeded home on a pass ball.

The score remained tied at three until the bottom of the ninth when Mike Smith (Warner, N.H.) earned a full count, bases loaded walk, scoring Eric Lajoie (Oakham, Mass.) from third with the game winning run.

Sophomore Trenton Gibson (Henderson, Nev.) earned his second collegiate win, allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings of work. Senior Jeff DiLorenzo (Coventry, R.I.) started the game for the Hawks, pitching six strong innings.

In game two, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Austin Phillips led off the game with a double into the centerfield gap, Todd Tompkins drove him in with an RBI triple. Tom Natoli (Suffern, N.Y.) followed with a single through the right side, scoring Tompkins from third.

Unfortunately the Hawks weren't able to get to Beloit starting pitcher Grant Henricksen the rest of the day, suffering a 3-2 setback.

Tony Cantalupo (De Pere, Wisc.) took the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits, in a complete game effort. The split puts the Hawks at 1-1 on the season. Becker will return to action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader with Westfield State at 2:00pm.
