Field Hockey Winning Streak Ends With 3-1 Loss To Daniel Webster
Nashua, N.H. – Natalie Bates (N. Kingstown, R.I.) notched two goals helping lead the Daniel Webster College field hockey team to one of its biggest victories in its brief three-year history, defeating visiting Becker College, 3-1 in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup Thursday at Harvey Woods Field.
The victory marked the first time in program history that the Eagles (5-2, 2-0 NECC) bested the two-time NECC defending tournament champion and gave the Eagles sole possession of first place in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
Both Bates goals came during the first half, in which she got off five shots. Her first came off of a penalty corner at the 24-minute mark and was assisted by freshman Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.). Bates' second goal was netted only four minutes later when she stole the ball cleanly off a Becker defender and sent one flying high into the top of the net.
Becker (3-8, 1-1 NECC) shaved the lead in half on a Michelle Griczika (Barre, Mass.) conversion of a penalty corner with two and a half minutes to go before the break.
The Eagles' iced it in the 57th minute when rookie Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) tipped home Sarah Steves (Granville, N.Y.) pass on a play that originally began with a penalty corner.
The Eagles controlled the tempo for much of the game, holding the Hawks to only four goals on the day including just one in the second half as they bottled the ball in the Hawks' defensive end. Daniel Webster would finish with a total of ten shots in the contest.
Hawk's goalie Nakita Gosselin (Springfield, Vt.) had five saves in the game.
Freshman Teresa Moscati (Buffalo, N.Y.) earned two saves in her first collegiate start, including a spectacular stop with eight minutes left in the first period on a deflection from the Hawks' Stephanie Dixon (Rockport, Mass.).
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Bay Path to face the Wildcats in a NECC matchup at 1:00 p.m. Becker College will host NECC foe Elms College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
