Mass. Maritime Outlasts Men's Soccer, 2-1
LEICESTER, Mass. – Freshman forward Konnor Scarponi (Brunswick, Maine) scored the eventual game winner to lead the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy to a 2-1 win over host Becker College in men's soccer action on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The Buccaneers open their season at 1-0 while the Hawks of Becker fall to 0-3 to start their 2013 campaign.
The Buccaneers struck just 6:41 into the game when senior back Daniel Riley (Hanover, Mass.) took a brilliant pass on the right side of the box and put it away for his first goal of the season as Massachusetts Maritime went up 1-0. That score would stand going into halftime.
Becker's best chance for the equalizer came with 31:32 remaining in the game, as freshman midfielder William Tripp (Aberdeen, Md.) attempted to score on a header. The Buccaneer goalkeeper, freshman Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.), was up to the challenge, making the save and turning the Hawk attack aside.
With 13:18 left, Massachusetts Maritime scored their insurance goal after repeated shots led to a wide open strike into the top right corner by Scarponi. That goal proved fortuitous, as less than two minutes later, Becker freshman midfielder Alexandre Bresse (Quebec City, Quebec) buried a shot into the bottom right corner and just outside Cohen's reach for the first Becker goal of the season, made possible with an assist from junior midfielder Ryan Barry (N. Attleboro, Mass.). The score was now 2-1 with 11:24 remaining, and that would hold up.
Becker senior goalkeeper Tim MacDonald (Holden, Mass.) finished the night with 14 saves while freshman goalie Thomas Funkhauser (Purcellville, Va.) had a shutout in the first half for Massachusetts Maritime. In the second period, Cohen entered the game for Maritime and tallied two stops in 45 minutes. The Buccaneers outshot the Hawks, 26-4.
Becker will look to break into the win column for the first time this season when they travel to Fitchburg State on Saturday to take on the Falcons in a 12:00 p.m. match. Massachusetts Maritime will play host to the Leopards of the Wentworth Institute of Technology next Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
