Softball Edges Out Newbury, 4-3

Chestnut Hill, Mass.- The Becker College edged out Newbury College by 4-3 in New England Collegiate Conference softball action Thursday afternoon. The second game of the double header was called in the first inning due to rain.   Freshman, Megan Cordon (Dover, N.H./Dover) led the way for the Hawks by going 2 for 3 at the plate, while striking out seven on the mound to earn the victory.

The first two innings of the game looked to be a pitchers duel as both Cordon and Newbury's Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) were hitting the strike zone hard, allowing one hit through two innings.  However the Hawks would strike first in the top of the third, taking advantage of a walk and an error by the Nighthawks, loading the bases with two outs.   Junior Larissa Paula (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) stepped to the plate and drove a triple over the head of the outfield, driving in all three runs, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Nighthawks would not be denied as they rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Senior Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) sparked the offense, hitting her first homerun of the season over the fence in left field, cutting the Hawks lead to 3-1.

Becker added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch, plating Shawna Drown (Watertown, TN./Essex Aggie) with the eventual game winning run,

In the bottom of the seventh Nicole Cuneo (Norton, Mass./Norton) and Farioli reached base on a single and a fielder's choice. Theresa Hylinkski (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) followed with a ground out for the first out of the inning, Cuneo would come in to score from third and cut the Hawks lead to 4-2.  Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) reached on an error and Farioli came around to score her second run of the game, cutting the lead to 4-3.  However, the rally fell just short as Roach grounded out to the catcher to seal the victory for the Hawks.

The loss Newbury drops to 4-18, 2-3 NECC, while Becker improves to 7-18, 4-1 NECC. The Hawks return to the diamond on Saturday April 14 when they host Wheelock College for a double header starting at 1:00pm.
