Gallo Makes 26 Saves In Loss To Salem State

LEICESTER, Mass. – Becker College fell to Salem State 2-1 in non-conference women's field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The loss drops the Hawks record to 1-4 while the Vikings sail to 2-3.

Salem State had plenty of chances to get on the board in the first half. With 22:40 remaining in the first stanza, Julia Klein (Liverpool, N.Y.) lined up a penalty shot, but Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.)  made a sprawling  save to keep the Vikings off the board.  Marissa Penge (Liverpool, N.Y.) slipped one past Gallo in the 27th minute on a pass from Natalie Bourne (Tewksbury, Mass.) to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Vikings increased their lead to 2-0 in the 46th minute when Penge fed a beautiful pass through the Hawks defense to Micaela Keogh (Reading, Mass.) for her first goal of the season.

Amy Grenier (Westminster, Mass.) cut the Hawks deficit in half in the 52nd minute when she redirected the ball off Carolyn Woodin's (Arlington, Mass.) blocker on a penalty shot.

Becker freshman Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine) made four defensive saves, while Gallo finished with her second best save output of her career with 26.  Carolyn Woodin made three saves for the Vikings.

Both teams return to action on Saturday (September 19).  Salem State will continue Little East Conference play against UMass Dartmouth at noon, while the Hawks host Colby-Sawyer College at 2:00 p.m.
