For the second consecutive year, the student-athletes of the Becker College men's ice hockey team will be participating in the Worcester County Walk to End Alzheimer's program, that coming on Sunday, October 4, 2020.
"I always want to help out as much as I can [in the community]." Becker head coach Mike Young said. "But it has to be something everyone wants to be involved in. Last year we acted as cheerleaders for the actual walk, [supporting] people from the sidelines. This year, with circumstances being different, it's a virtual walk, so we'll be walking as a team, while wearing masks and following social distance guidelines."
Young is very proud of his players in how they have conducted themselves in meeting the challenges of the Fall semester.
"I feel like everybody's on the same page with this group. Everybody pulls their own weight." The second-year coach enthused. "Every single person on the team has stepped up. It's been immediate. The guys have all done exceptional jobs."
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's® is the world's largest fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support and research.
"We are truly thankful to the Becker College Men's Ice Hockey team for their continued support and participation in the Worcester County Walk to End Alzheimer's," said Jim Wessler, CEO of the Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter in an official statement. "With the help of their fundraising efforts, we can continue to provide care and support to families while also advancing critical research toward methods of treatment and prevention."
It is estimated that more than five million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease.
"Alzheimer's is not taking a hiatus during COVID-19 and neither are we," Wessler added. "We must continue Walk to End Alzheimer's, and we are working with all participants to ensure they have a powerful and moving experience that is felt when we are together."
The Hawks of the Becker men's ice hockey team are eager to help once again this year.
"Last year was our first time doing it as a team." Senior team captain Chuck Costello said about last year's event. "It was a great outcome. We all wore Becker apparel. All the people walking in it, they saw what we were wearing, and felt a little more motivated to finish that walk. They saw people supporting them, cheering them on, the smiles on their faces, it was nice to see."
"We're all excited to get back at it."
