Ian Simpson begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Becker College men’s ice hockey program.
“Ian is relentlessly positive and energetic. He has been around the game for a long time and is certainly a terrific asset for our group,” said Becker College men’s ice hockey head coach, Mike Young. “I couldn’t be happier to have him a part of Hawks Hockey and I look forward to all the progress he’ll help us make as a team.”
Simpson, an Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native, comes to Becker College after spending the three seasons coaching and serving as a skills instructor in the Boston area. Prior to that, Simpson spent eight years coaching in various leagues throughout the U.S. Northeast and in Canada, including the CCHL2 in Eastern Ontario.
“Joining Becker College is an exciting opportunity for me and I am looking forward to working with Coach Young, the coaching staff and the student-athletes,” said Simpson. “My experience in skill development have helped me prepare for the jump to into NCAA DIII coaching and I am looking forward to the first season.”
Simpson played five seasons of Canadian Junior B hockey, winning a CCHL2 Championship in 2005. He appeared in 164 games in his CCHL2 career, scoring 98 goals and 92 assists for 190 points.
Simpson then traveled overseas to play for Northumbria University in the U.K., where he notched a total of 40 points (24 goals and 16 assists) in the six-game season.
A 2005 Political Science graduate of the University of Ottawa, Simpson obtained his MBA from Northumbria University in 2010. Simpson and his wife, Ryann, reside in the Worcester area.
