WATERTOWN, Mass. - The Becker College men's soccer team opened New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action with a 5-2 loss to Newbury College, Saturday afternoon. Newbury senior midfielder Milton Ricaurte (Barranquilla, Colombia) led the Nighthawks to the win with two goals including the game-winner in the 20th minute.
Ricaurte wasted little time as he gave the Nighthawks the quick 1-0 advantage scoring an unassisted goal nine minutes into the contest. Moments later, sophomore forward Ethan Forrest (East Bridgewater, Mass.) connected with fellow senior midfielder Rodriguez Pierre (Somerville, Mass.) to give Newbury the quick two goal lead.
However, the Nighthawks' offense was not done. Ricaurte scored for the second time in the first half for his fourth goal of the season to lead the Nighthawks into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.
When the teams emerged for the start of the second period, Newbury grabbed another goal from Pierre - his team-leading fifth of the season - before Becker finally got on the scoreboard. Hawks first year midfielder Cody Lavallee (Burrillville, R.I.) broke up the shutout scoring unassisted in the 63rd minute to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Nighthawks were not backing down and continued to play hard until late in the contest. From 40 yards out in the center of the pitch, first year defender Kyle Soares (Acushnet, Mass.) found junior midfielder Emmett Dixon(Providence, R.I.) open along the nearside of the field. Seven yards out the Dixon buried the Nighthawks' fifth goal.
Newbury improves to 3-8-1 and open NECC action at 1-0 while Becker falls to 2-10 and 0-1 in the conference. The Nighthawks return to the pitch next Saturday October 11th when they travel up Route 30 for an 11:00 a.m. tilt against conference foe Regis College. The Hawks break from conference action when they host Curry College, Wednesday October 8th at 4:00 p.m. in Leicester, Mass.
