WORCESTER – Sophomore Cassidhe Wozniak (Turners Falls, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including a third-period, game-deciding goal as the Becker Hawks swept a weekend home-and-home series against the New England College Pilgrims, 3-2 on Saturday night.

GAME SUMMARY

Tied 2-2 in the third period, Wozniak's game-deciding goal looked like it would come on a breakaway opportunity thanks to an outlet pass by sophomore Katie Puumala (Framingham, Mass.). Puumala's pass just missed the stick of Wozniak at center ice, but the pass ended up going on the Pilgrims net.

New England College sophomore goalie Sean D'urso (Andover, Mass.) misplayed the puck, leaving a rebound in the slot that Wozniak was able to fire past D'urso on the blocker side to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.

The Pilgrims best opportunity to force overtime came with the D'urso pulled from the goal and during an NEC power play in the final minute in a 6-on-4 situation.

Pilgrims freshman Emily Lenzen (Littleton, Colo.) fired a wrist shot from the middle of the point, through a screen of players and off the outside of the Hawks goal post, preserving the 3-2 Becker advantage.

Wozniak was first on the board in the game, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The power-play tally found the stick of Wozniak thanks to a save at the blue line from junior Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) and a pass from Puumala to Wozniak, giving Becker the game's opening goal.

Lenzen tied the game 1-1 late in the opening period with a power-play goal of her own. From the top of the slot, Lenzen fired a shot past the blocker side of Hawks sophomore goalie Maddy Morgan (Riverside, Calif.).

Becker regained the lead in the second period on a power-play goal by junior Gabby Petrisin (High Bridge, N.J.) only to be matched 1:53 later by the Pilgrims on an unassisted goal by sophomore Cassandra Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) to tie the game at 2-2

FOR THE HAWKS

• Wozniak finished with a game-high eight shots on goal. Her two-goal performance puts her in the team lead with five goals this season.
• Puumala finished the night with a pair of assists as she now leads the team with five helpers this season.
• Morgan made 31 saves on the night, improving her record to 1-1-0 in her first win of 2021.
• The Hawks are on a three-game winning streak after a win against Anna Maria last weekend and the sweep of the home-and-home this weekend against NEC. It's the third consecutive season the Hawks have had a three-game winning streak at some point in the season.

FOR THE PILGRIMS

• Kelly added an assist on the other NEC goal as she finished with one goal and one assist. Kelly leads the team with three assists and four points.
• Lenzen's first period goal was the first of her career as well as her first career point.
• D'urso made 31 saves for the Pilgrims in her first appearance of the season. She falls to 0-1-0 with the loss.

The Hawks return on March 6 and 7 as part of a home-and-home series with Connecticut College. The Pilgrims are in search of their first win of the season and head back to the ice on March 5 and 6 with a home-and-home series against Plymouth State.
