Hawks Shorthanded Feat Falls Shy in 5-2 Loss at Conn. College

GAME SUMMARY

The Camels were first on the board, 2:42 into the game on a goal by senior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) to give Conn. College a 1-0 lead.

Becker tied things at 1-1 midway through the first period on a shorthanded goal by sophomore Katie Puumala (Framingham, Mass.) her second of the season and her third career shorthanded goal.

A late, first period goal by Phelan would put Conn. College ahead 2-1 after the opening period.

A pair of second period goals scored 3:49 apart in the late stages of the second period for Camels junior Melissa Alexander (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline O'Keefe (Winthrop, Mass.) extended their lead to 4-1 through two periods.

Hawks sophomore Trinity White (Sandwich, Mass.) put the Hawks back within two goals early in the third period on her first career collegiate goal, coming shorthanded, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

But just 15 seconds later, the Camels would regain their three-goal advantage on a power-play goal by Phelan, her second of the night to give the Camels a 5-2 lead.

 

FOR THE HAWKS

  • The shorthanded goals by Puumala and White marked the first time in program history the Hawks scored two goals shorthanded in the same game.
  • Puumala added an assist on White's shorthanded goal. Junior Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) also factored into the goal with an assist.
  • Sophomore Amber Lee (Nashua, N.H.) matched a season-high with 49 saves but drops to 2-3-0 with the loss.

 

FOR THE CAMELS

  • Phelan and Dillon both finished with three points. Phelan finished with two goals and one assist while Dillon had one goal and two assists.
  • Sophomore Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) made 16 saves and grabbed the victory to improve to 1-0-0.
