Women's Tennis Wins Second Straight, 9-0, at Newbury

WESTON, Mass. – Building a program takes time, but Becker College women's tennis coach Brad Yaylaian's efforts are starting to bear fruit. For the first time since 2012, the Hawks won back-to-back matches as they defeated Newbury College, 9-0, on Tuesday (September 15).

The win evened the Hawks' record at 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. The Nighthawks fell to 0-2 overall and in the NECC.

Becker made quick work of all three doubles matches, starting with an 8-0 win by Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) at number three. The number one duo of Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) were 8-2 winners while Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) and Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) prevailed, 8-3, at number two.

In three of the singles matches, Becker did not lose a single game as Leger (No. 3), Mahan (No. 4) and Saltvick (No. 6) all won 6-0, 6-0. Andrade won her No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 6-0 over Jessica Russo.

The closest two matches came at number one and five singles. Lord won a 10-3 super tiebreaker in the third set to beat Katelynne Bazile 6-3, 2-6, 10-3. Wodell used a break in each set to top Destiny Spears 6-4, 6-4.

Becker takes a break from NECC action when it travels to crosstown foe Clark University on Thursday for a 5 p.m. tilt.
