LEICESTER, Mass. – Michael McMahon (Canton, Mass.), a two-year captain of the Becker College baseball team has, for the second year in a row, been voted to the College of Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) All-District® Baseball Team, as announced by the organization Thursday afternoon.
The 2020 Academic All-District® Baseball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
"It truly means a lot to be honored by such a prestigious organization like CoSIDA, as well as be recognized on a list with so many amazing baseball players from across the area," said McMahon. "There are so many great student-athletes at Becker College that do tremendous things both on and off the field of play – so it is a privileged to represent Becker College on a list featuring student-athletes from such prestigious colleges and universities."
McMahon is the first Becker College student-athlete to receive this accolade twice, as he was also named to the 2019 CoSIDA All-District® Baseball Team, and is the fifth overall CoSIDA All-District® honoree in the Hawks' school history.
"With such a great athletics history here at Becker College, it is also very humbling to become the first student-athlete to achieve this honor twice," mentioned McMahon.
The senior outfielder just concluded a phenomenal athletic and academic career at Becker College, finishing his collegiate career with a 4.00 cumulative GPA, which in turn, led to the recognition of both the Becker College President's & Dean's Awards during a virtual commencement held this past weekend.
McMahon's playing season was cut short this season due to COVID-19, but played in 12 games during his senior campaign. This season, he posted a team-best batting average of .429. He led the team with 35 at-bats, 15 hits, a .543 slugging percentage, and a .474 on-base percentage. He was named the Becker Athlete of the Week on March 16 for finishing the week with a .500 batting average, going 8-for-16 from the batter's box. In his final career doubleheader on March 12, he went 5-for-6 with one run, two RBI and a stolen base against Mount Saint Joseph. Later in the season, he was named to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Sportsmanship Team.
McMahon finished his career at Becker College with a .311 batting average and a .388 on-base percentage. His career totals are: 164 at-bats, 27 runs, 51 hits, 12 doubles, one home run, 27 RBI, 13 walks, and five stolen bases. In the field, he concluded his career with a .933 fielding percentage.
Off the field, McMahon is an outstanding student-leader who has shined in the classroom and throughout the Becker community. He has been the President of Becker's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is also an appointed member of the National SAAC, and this year was named to the NCAA Division III Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. As a member of SAAC, McMahon has worked with Special Olympics in five different states (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, California, and Indiana) and has helped run Becker's Annual National Student-Athlete Day Celebration over the past three years.
He has been twice-voted Becker College student of the year – in his freshman and junior years, and was a selected member of Becker's Leaders of Excellence and Athletic Pride group in his sophomore year. He was awarded Academic Achievement awards in his sophomore and junior years, and was also the recipient of the Sport Management Aspiring Scholar Award and named the 2019 Becker College Beaudoin Scholar in his junior year.
Most recently, McMahon was awarded the President's & Dean's awards at virtual graduation. He also was the recipient of the John J. Dorsey Scholar Athlete Award, which was presented at the Becker Senior Awards Celebration this spring. Also during his senior year, he was a recipient of the 2019 Mechanics Hall Collegiate Apprentice Award at the Annual Celebration of Excellence.
"We are so proud of Michael," commented head baseball coach, Brian Kehew. "He has been a model student-athlete and leader. He represents everything we strive to be as a college and baseball team. There is no one more deserving of this recognition."
McMahon is a member of three different honors societies: Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Chi, and Chi Alpha Sigma which is the National Student-Athlete honor society. He has been three-times been named to the NECC Spring All-Academic Team and has earned Dean's List honors every semester as a student.
McMahon is also very active in the community. He works as an athletic tutor, is a member of both the "Love Your Melon Crew" and Business Clubs on campus. This past fall, he interned with the athletic department, and has also worked with Campus Activities and Student Leadership on campus.
Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District® will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. Academic All-America® honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the links above, and are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
