Hawks Make Return to Diamond, Fall to Fisher on Opening Night

Hawks junior Andrew Bumpus

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Seeing the baseball diamond for the first time in 357 days, the Becker Hawks made their season debut on Wednesday night at the New England Baseball Complex in a 14-3 loss to the Fisher College Falcons.

Score: Fisher 14 – Becker 3

Records: The Becker College Hawks 0-1 | The Fisher College Falcons 4-1

GAME SUMMARY

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Falcons increased their lead on a two-run home run by freshman Ivanuel Hernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico), his first collegiate homer.

With two outs, sophomore John Batista (Lawrence, Mass.) doubled to center field before being knocked in on Hernandez's home run to right-center field, giving Fisher a 3-0 lead.

The Falcons, now leading 4-0, did more damage in the fourth inning, again taking advantage of a two-out situation to add to their lead.

A dropped foul ball error by the Hawks could have gotten them out of the fourth inning with no damage done, but an RBI single by junior Elijah Perez (Lawrence, Mass.) and a series of walks with the bases loaded, would boost the Falcons advantage to 7-0.

Becker broke the shutout in the top of the fifth with some two-out luck of their own. After freshman Ethan Perry (Dartmouth, Mass.) drew a walk, junior Andrew Bumpus (Carver, Mass.) hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the Falcons outfielder, which allowed Perry to score all the way from first, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

Hernandez struck again in the bottom of the sixth with his second home run of the night. Another two-run home run, this time to right field, all part of a four-run inning for Fisher, increasing their lead to 11-1.

Bumpus earned his first RBI of the season in the eighth, knocking in Perry and senior Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.) on a double down the left-field line, making the game 11-3.

FOR THE HAWKS

  • Bumpus batted 2-for-4, including a double and a triple on the night.
  • Perry went 2-for-3, including a double, in his collegiate debut.
  • Junior Tevon Johnson (New Bedford, Mass.) got the start for Becker, going 3.2 innings while allowing seven runs, three earned, on five hits. The loss drops him to 0-1.

FOR THE FALCONS

  • Hernandez batted 2-for-5 on the night, finishing with two home runs and four RBI.
  • Freshman Andres Meletiche (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) pitched five innings for the Falcons, allowing no runs on five hits. He improves to 2-0 this season.
  • Senior Mitchell Lundholm (Plymouth, Mass.) finished 2-for-4, including an eighth-inning, two-run home run. He also finished with four RBI for Fisher.
