Hawks Baseball Falls in Pair of One-Run Losses at Curry

Kevin Santiago | Becker vs. Colby-Sawyer 03.07.20

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry Colonels took both games of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, winning both games by one-run over the Becker Hawks.

THE BASICS

March 21, 2021

Jack Valley Diamond

Becker Hawks 0-4

Curry Colonels 1-0

GAME ONE: Curry 1 – Becker 0

Curry scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the third with junior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) singling with a base hit up the middle, scoring freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) from second base.

The Hawks had a chance in the fifth to tie the game, but freshman Silas Thomas (Sequim, Wash.) was thrown out trying to score, leaving the Colonels leading 1-0.

Becker had two runners on in the seventh, but a ground out to the shortstop ended the Hawks changes as Curry took home the 1-0 win.

In the pitcher's duel, Colonels senior Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits while striking out seven. Hawks junior Tevon Johnson (New Bedford, Mass.) went six innings for the Hawks, allowing three hits and striking out seven.

---

For Curry, Jaume, Goonan, and senior Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) each had a hit for the Colonels. Keller had a lead-off double in the second.

For Becker, senior Kevin Santiago (New Bedford, Mass.) batted 3-for-4, all singles. Senior Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.) and freshman Anthony Conforti (Peabody, Mass.) both had a double.

Winning Pitcher: Wensley (1-0)

Losing Pitcher: Johnson (0-2)

GAME TWO: Curry 4 – Becker 3

The Colonels made a late-game comeback in the second game to sweep the Sunday doubleheader over Becker.

Curry trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth and led off the inning with a double to left field by junior Jacob Bishop (Taunton, Mass.). Later in the inning, the Colonels had runners on second and third that were knocked home on a two-RBI single by junior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) to give the Colonels a 4-3 lead.

The Hawks came up in the top of the ninth and had a runner on second with a chance to tie the game, but Conforti grounded out to the third baseman to end the game.

Becker put up three runs in the first inning thanks to a series of errors, passed balls, and wild pitches by the Colonels, but two-run innings in the fifth and eighth lifted Curry over Becker.

For Curry, senior Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) batted 2-for-5, including a fifth-inning double that drove in two runs. Leonard batted 1-for-3 with the game-leading, two-RBI single.

For Becker, Rivera batted 1-for-3 including a first-inning double. He later scored in that inning.
