Wallace Tricks Owls As Ice Hawks Roll

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -  Sophomore James Wallace (Levittown, PA) notched his first career hat-trick as the Becker Hawks exploded for four second period goals to erase a 2-0 deficit en route to a 6-3 win over Westfield State University in non-conference men's ice hockey action at New England Sports Center on Wednesday evening. With the win the Hawks head into the winter break sporting a 4-7 record while the Owls dip to 7-3 on the season.

Bryan Parsons (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Nicholas McKee (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Conner Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.) each tallied goals for the Hawks, while Connor Merrick (Manchester, NH) and Corey Sherman (Hilton, NY) each added  two assists. Freshman Brandon Morgan (Rochester, NY) contributed a tri of helpers in the win.

Sophomore forward Cory Wilson got Westfield off to a fast start just four minutes into the contest, beating Becker College junior goaltender Tyler Stepke (Mars, PA) tucking the first goal of the game just under his sprawling left pad. The Owls doubled their advantage at the 15:34 mark when sophomore Nik Passero found an open Jeremy Young for the visitors as Westfield carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Hawks turned the tables in the second period outscoring the Owls 4-0 over the second twenty minute span. After the Owls held the Hawks scoreless for a 5 minute major penalty to start the second frame, Becker finally solved Owls netminder Jonathan LoParco.

First, Becker junior Connor Merrick had his wrist shot from the top of the right circle tipped past LoParco by junior Nicholas McKee. Next, Wallace would get the hot hand for Becker, potting a pair of goals, including his second from an impossible angle to the left of the goal that soared top shelf past the Owls goaltender to give the Hawks their first lead of  the game at 3-2. The Hawks doubled their lead with just under a minute left in the period with a power-play goal off the stick of Bryan Parsons, with Morgan and Merrick notching assists.

Becker would continue to dominate in the third period. Hawks forward Connor Allison would open up the frame with an unassisted shorthanded goal, then Wallace would complete his hat trick at the 5:43 mark when Morgan found him wide open in the slot for the 6-3 final.

Stepke finished with 29 saves for his second win of the season, his counterpart LoParco finished the night with 31 stops in the loss.
