LEICESTER, Mass. – For the second match in a row, the outcome for the Becker College women's tennis team came down to the final singles match. This time it went the Hawks' way as they topped Lesley University, 5-4, on Wednesday (September 23).
With the victory, Becker improved to 5-5 overall and 4-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference as it stayed atop the league standings. The four conference wins are as many as the Hawks have accumulated in the previous two seasons combined. In addition, it's the first time Becker has been 4-0 in the NECC since it went 9-0 in 2011. The Lynx dropped to 1-8 overall, 1-3 in the conference.
Tied at 4-4, the team victory came down to number two singles. Sophomore Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) split her first two sets then came through with a break of serve to top Frances De Leon 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to claim the win.
After dropping two of three doubles matches, Becker rallied to win four of six singles matches. Senior Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) easily won 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles over Hannah Levensailor. Rookie Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) rolled through Courtney Goggin, 6-2, 6-1 at number five. Sophomore Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) tied the match by stopping Rose Heller 6-2, 6-4 at number four.
Number two and three doubles were close as Saltvick and freshman Elizabeth Jezierski (Thompson, Conn.) won 8-6 against Goggin and Levnsailor at number three. Mahan and Wodell dropped a close 9-7 decision at number two to De Leon and Heller.
Becker continues conference action on Saturday (September 26) when it travels to defending conference champion Regis for a 2 p.m. tilt.
