Hawks Softball Sweeps Worcester State in Tuesday Doubleheader

WORCESTER – The Becker Hawks cruised to a 6-0 win over the Worcester State Lancers in game one, but the Hawks needed a comeback in game two, scoring eight runs in the sixth inning, to earn a sweep of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Worcester State.

GAME ONE: Becker 6 – Worcester State 0

The Hawks were on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third and one out, sophomore Holly Letourneau (Woonsocket, R.I.) singled to left field, scoring two Hawks for the 2-0 edge.

Becker added to their lead in the third, this time with the help of a sacrifice fly by Letourneau, which gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, in the circle, junior Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn.) was cruising, allowing four hits and striking out two through four innings.

In the fifth, the Hawks added plenty of insurance, starting with junior Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass.) hitting her first career home run, an inside-the-park, solo homer to give Becker a 4-0 lead.

Later in the fifth, Veillette scored on a wild pitch, increasing the lead to 5-0 while freshman Sheree Fallon (Danvers, Mass.) capped off the inning with an RBI single to center, putting Becker up 6-0.

For Becker, Letourneau finished 2-for-2 with three RBI while senior Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass.) batted 2-for-4 with a double. Veillette earned the win and her first shutout of the season while allowing seven hits and striking out four.

For Worcester State, seven different players had one hit with senior Liv Larson (Marlborough, Mass.), junior Rachel Bigelow (Westborough, Mass.), and freshman Emily Bartlett (Lowell, Mass.) all hitting a double.

GAME TWO: Becker 11 – Worcester State 5

The Hawks trailed for much of the second game by their best offensive inning of the season appeared in the top of the sixth as Becker put up eight runs to overtake the Lancers in the second game.

Entering the sixth trailing 4-1, the Hawks did much of their damage with two outs. An RBI single by freshman Kayla Dell'Anno (Medford, Mass.) and RBI groundout by Simonian cut the deficit to 4-3 with two outs in the inning.

A two-RBI base hit to left field by Veillette gave the Hawks their first lead of game two, 5-4. Later in the inning and with runners on second and third, Letourneau delivered at the plate once again, driving a double down the left field line, scoring a pair of Hawks to up the advantage to 7-4.

Further in the sixth and again with runners on second and third, sophomore Lindsay Mitchell (Billerica, Mass.) helped the cause with a two-run single up the middle and a 9-4 lead.

The Lancers added a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 9-5, but Becker answered back in the top of the seventh with two more runs thanks to a Lancers error and an RBI single by Ellis to put the Hawks ahead 11-5.

For Becker, Ellis and Veillette both finished 2-for-5 at the plate. Freshman Jilliana Stevens (Farmington, N.H.) went 2-for-4, both singles.

For Worcester State, freshman Lauren Dube (Leominster, Mass.) was 3-of-4 at the plate, all singles. Senior Ally Tocman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also batted 3-for-4, including a double.
