Hawks, Lynx Split Doubleheader for Second Consecutive Day

LEICESTER, Mass. – For the second straight day, the Hawks and Lynx split Sunday's doubleheader with Becker winning game one and Lesley winning game two. The split of Sunday's doubleheader concludes a four-game set between the Hawks and Lynx this weekend with each team going 2-2.

THE BASICS

April 11, 2021

Russell Field

Becker Hawks 7-9 (3-5 NECC)

Lesley Lynx 4-2 (4-2 NECC)

GAME ONE: Becker 12 – Lesley 4 (Final / 6 Innings)

The Hawks controlled the game throughout but a bottom of the sixth, walk-off grand slam forced the eight-run rule in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.

Becker led 8-4 in the sixth and led off the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Junior Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn.) stepped in and delivered her second home run of the game, a grand slam to center field for the 12-4 victory.

Becker charged out to an early lead thanks to a six-run bottom of the second inning. The Hawks led 1-0 after a wild pitch and increased that lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by junior Emma Perry (East Bridgewater, Mass.).

An RBI groundout by senior Elizabeth Simonian (Auburn, Mass.) added to the lead while Veillette capped off the inning with her first home run of the game, a two-run shot for a 6-0 edge.

Lesley cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the third on a three-run home run to center field by senior Jordan Day (Seminole, Fla.) and got within two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by junior Antonia Kieran (Wilmington, Mass.).

The Hawks got their 8-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by junior Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.).

---

For Becker, Veillette batted 2-for-4 with a career-high six RBI. Her two home runs give her a team-high six on the season. Iacovelli finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

For Lesley, Day finished 1-for-2, hitting her first home run of the season. Junior Ilana Zack (Randolph, Mass.) went 1-for-3 with a double.

Winning Pitcher: Ashley Veillette (3-3)

Losing Pitcher: Samantha Mecklenburg (0-1)

GAME TWO: Lesley 13 – Becker 2

The second game belonged to the Lynx from start-to-finish as the Hawks and Lynx split Sunday's doubleheader and split the weekend's four-game set.

Lesley jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first with the help of two home runs in the opening inning. Junior Mahlia Medina (Temecula, Calif.) started the game with a lead-off solo home run. A wild pitch helped the Lynx to a 2-0 lead, which was followed two batters later by a three-run home run for Kieran, giving the Lynx a 5-0 edge.

The Lynx extended that lead in the top of the third with an RBI double by Zack, an RBI single by Kieran, and an RBI groundout by junior Sam Jensen (Milton, Mass.) to lead 8-0.

An RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the third would help the Hawks avoid the eight-run rule, as they trailed 8-1 until the seventh.

Lesley closed the game with another five-run inning in the seventh, including the second home run of the game for Medina. The Hawks added a final run in the bottom of the seventh in the 13-2 loss.

---

For Lesley, Medina batted 3-for-3, including two home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored. Five of the nine starters for the Lynx had at least two hits in game two.

For Becker, Veillette batted 2-for-4, both singles and a run scored. Iacovelli and senior Sarah Ellis (Berkley, Mass.) each had a double.

Winning Pitcher: Jordan Day (2-0)

Losing Pitcher: Lindsay Mitchell (3-5)
