LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team lost in four sets to the visiting Newbury College in NECC action on Friday evening at the Leicester Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 in favor of the visitors.
Senior outsider hitter Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H. / Timberlane) led the Hawks of Becker (7-13 / 0-3 NECC) with 11 kills and four block assists. Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J. / Bronx) tallied eight kills with seven total blocks, while junior setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) finished with a match-high 22 digs to go along with 17 set assists. Freshman outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional) added six kills and 15 digs.
The Nighthawks of Newbury (6-6 / 2-1 NECC) were led by senior middle-blocker Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif. / Centennial) with 21 kills, four service aces and 13 digs. Junior setter Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark. / Springdale) guided the offense with 45 set assists and 11 digs. Senior Kataya Sykes (Brockton, Mass. / Brockton) had 16 kills.
After dropping the first two sets and trailing much of the third, Becker closed out the set on four straight points, including three off the serve of sophomore libero Brittney Bullis (Stafford, Va. / Mountain View) to get back into the match.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth thriller that sat the Hawks rally back from being down 12-4, finally taking the lead at 20-19, once again off Bullis serve. But this time it was the Nighthawks who closed out, winning six of the last seven rallies.
Becker will be back on the court on Wednesday when they travel to Bay Path College for a 7:00 p.m. conference matchup. Newbury heads home to play Lasell College on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
