WLAX Championship Game Preview: No. 1 Becker vs. No. 3 Elms

LEICESTER, Mass. – The New England Collegiate Conference will crown a champion on Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse as the No. 1 seed Becker Hawks host the No. 3 seed Elms Blazers for the right to qualify for the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

The Hawks reached the Championship Game following a 20-4 win over the No. 4 seed Mitchell Mariners while the Blazers made it to this point with the help of a last-minute goal against No. 2 New England College in a 12-11 victory, upsetting the Pilgrims to reach the Title Game.

Becker's attack is led by the NECC Offensive Player of the Year, junior Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) who now leads the conference with 46 goals, 28 assists, and 74 points.

Also in the attack is junior Julia Ravenelle (Barrington, N.H.) and senior Arianna Calouro (East Providence, R.I.). Ravenelle is third in the NECC with 38 goals and second in assists with 21. Calouro adds 27 goals and 15 assists for the Hawks.

Meanwhile, in the midfield and on defense, junior Kylian Kelly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) continues to show her versatility, helping her win the NECC Defensive Player of the Year award. Kelly leads the Hawks in ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers while also adding 14 goals and 10 assists on the attack for the Hawks.

On defense, seniors Katherine Capobianco (North Andover, Mass.) and Emma Schoenbeck (Gorham, N.H.), junior Olivia Sherwood (Southington, Conn.), and freshman Karina Laxton (Holbrook, N.Y.) have all been part of a Hawks team that allows the fewest goals per game in the conference.

In goal, freshman Chloe Isola (Oviedo, Fla.) is the conference's leader in saves made and goals against average.

Conway, Ravenelle, and Kelly were all named to the NECC Women's Lacrosse First Team All-Conference.

For Elms, sophomore Anna-Elise Pikul (Belchertown, Mass.) is the Blazers leading scorer, having 20 goals and five assists this season.

Junior Arianna Callahan (West Springfield, Mass.), sophomore Taylor Borla (Southington, Conn.), and freshman Elise Paier (West Springfield, Mass.) also help the Blazers attack, as all three have double-digit goal totals for the season. Borla leads this trio in goals with 17.

Senior Erienne Dowe (Somers, Conn.) and junior Bryce McDonald (Dracut, Mass.) are keys in the Blazers defense as both are top-two in ground balls for the Elms defense this season.

In net will likely be junior Emma Walsh (Dracut, Mass.) for the Blazers. Walsh is 3-2 this season for Elms and leads the conference in save percentage and fewest goals allowed.

Pikul and McDonald were both named to the NECC Women's Lacrosse First Team All-Conference.

The Hawks and Blazers split their regular season meetings in 2021. In the first meeting on April 3, the Hawks nearly completed a four-goal comeback, only to fall 8-7 to Elms. In their second meeting, just a week ago on April 25, the Hawks rebuffed several attempted comebacks by the Blazers, as Becker clinched the No. 1 seed that afternoon in their 14-8 win.

With a spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line, the No. 1 Hawks and No. 3 Blazers face off on Alumni Field in Leicester, Mass. at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
